I look at you and see everything
I want to be
but will never achieve 
I see security 
but healthy vulnerability
I see strength
I see wisdom 
I see love
I see a girl living out her dreams
the dreams that scared her
the fear the fueled her
the ambition that helped her soar
I see
and I dream
but I’ll never be

When You Get to be My Age (May 24, 2019)

When you get to be my age you realize that everything happens for a reason. The person walking down the road towards you, the person sitting on the bus next to you, the terrible fall you had at age ten that put you in a cast; everything has a purpose and everything is meant to be. There are no mistakes or mishaps. God put you, your neighbor, and even their dog in this world for a reason. Appreciate everything and take joy in everything. When you wake up to birds chirping, listen. When the sun is setting over the horizon, watch. When it is nine pm but there is ice cream that you want, eat it. Don’t wait for a special occasion; make today, this minute, a special occasion. Make today the day you start living. Don’t wait for the rain to stop, or for your kids to move away. Don’t wait for a good time, because when you get to be my age, you realize that the time is up and you didn’t live.

Whenever I Hold a Pencil (May 24, 2019)

Whenever I hold a pencil I am lost. I am swept away by an alternative reality. One filled with pain, with sorrow, with brokeness. One filled with overwhelming joy, with gratitude, with love. I am free. I have the ability to write the truth. To rewrite my past; to rewrite my pain. I can be anything and do anything. No one can tell me who to be or what to do. I am completely myself, and to a pencil and paper, that is enough – I am perfect. I am not limited. No one has control except me. I am the master. I am the artist. I am the writer . I can be a princess or a singer or a butterfly. The possibilities are endless as long as there is led in my pencil and a story in my heart. When I hold a pencil I am completely and utterly free.
